teaching you how to walk in the light of god's word

1 Thessalonians 5:6, 8
6 Therefore, we must not fall asleep like other people, but we must stay awake and be sober.
8 Since we belong to the day, we must be sober. We must put on faith and love as a breastplate and the hope of salvation as a helmet.
Here in 1 Thessalonians 5, Paul is warning believers not to fall asleep as some do. To fall asleep refers to losing sight of who you are in Christ and falling prey to the deceptive lies of satan who wants to keep you from your full potential as a born-again child of God. One who stays awake continues to walk in the light of who God made them to be.
In verse eight he reveals three things you must put on and keep on to stay awake, living aware of the new man within. The first of these three is faith as a breastplate. Simply put, faith is trusting in God, not yourself. Faith is what made us right with God. Faith is maintained by hearing what God’s Word has to say about you. Next, he refers to love as a breastplate as well. Never fall for the lie God does not love you. His love is unconditional, never earned just received. Accept His love and choose to yield to and walk in that love every day.
You also need to maintain the hope of your salvation, which means to never lose sight of the Lord’s return. Hope is an expectation of good to come. The hope of our salvation is in knowing what lies ahead for us when Jesus returns. This hope will help you to keep your focus on our Savior, who will return for His church. Maintain these three key areas for your life and they will help you to stay awake, fully aware of who you are, what you have, and what you can do.
