Purifying Your Soul

1 Peter 1:22
Now that you have taken care to purify your souls through your submission to the Truth, you can experience real love for each other.

God created you as a spirit, which possess a soul, and lives in a body. Your soul is made up of mind (reasoning), will (choices), and emotion (feelings). You purify your soul from carnal ways by submission to the Truth. Your soul was not meant to dominate you, your spirit man was. When our soul is submitted to our spirit as a born again believer, it is submitted to the Truth, for our spirit man will always go the way of God. How do we get our soul submitted to our spirit man?

You begin with your mind, which is your reasoning. This is why your mind part of the soul needs to be renewed to the Word. You choose to accept and believe what God has said, not what your own reasoning tells you. Secondly you must submit your will, your personal choices for what you do to the will of God. Jesus knew what God’s Word said about Him going to the cross, and when satan tried to tempt Him to not fulfill God’s will, He went and spent time with the Father, submitting Himself to His will.

Finally you deal with those feelings of yours. You like David must speak to your emotions and keep them submitted to God. David spoke to his feelings when he felt depressed and told his soul to hope in God. We too must address our soul when our emotions try to take over. Get your soul submitted to your spirit by doing these things, and you will live a life submitted to the Truth that sets you free from your old soulish nature.
