One With The Word

John 8:31-32
31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.
32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

A disciple of Jesus is more than just someone who is born again. Being born again is just the beginning. The word disciple means one who learns through instruction under a teacher, with the purpose of adhering to their example. Many who say they are Christians seem content just to be born again, but the purpose was to become one who learns from and adheres to the example of our Savior, Jesus Christ. We should look and sound like Him.

Here in the above verses Jesus gives us another key nugget of what it takes to be His disciple. We must abide in His Word. What exactly does it mean to abide in His Word? The word abide means to remain and become one with. We are to become one with the Word of the Lord. You cannot do that if you do not live in His Word. Many today rarely pick up their Bibles, and modern day teaching says it’s bondage to try and live according to the Word of God, but that is not what Jesus said. He said if you become one with the Word it would bring liberty.

You see the devil doesn’t want you set free from sin and carnal fleshly ways, so he has deceived many saying that obedience to the Bible is bondage. But he is a liar. Stop listening to the voices of those who say such things. They are deceived themselves and trying to lead you away from the liberty and lifestyle of Jesus. If you renew your mind to the Word of God it will transform your life to live like Jesus (Rom. 12:2). If you want to become who Jesus made you to be, abide in His Word, become one with the Word, and you can follow in His footsteps as a disciple of Christ.
