Don’t Shipwreck Your Faith

1 Timothy 1:19
Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear. For some people have deliberately violated their consciences; as a result, their faith has been shipwrecked.

There is a vital truth revealed in this verse that is often overlooked when it comes to our walk of faith. Those who walk by faith and not by sight as we are told to do so in scripture, they have a complete trust in God and therefore trust that what God says is truth, and that settles every issue in life. When you have that kind of trust you will speak in line with His Word, and act in line with the Word as well. But there is something that can undermine our faith.

When a ship becomes shipwrecked in the days of the Bible it was usually because the ship had run aground on a sand bar or was sunk because it ran into rocks under the surface. In either case that ship is going nowhere. This is what can happen to a believers faith if they do not pay attention to their conscience. The conscience is the voice of our spirit man within (Romans 9:1). If we reject the voice of our spirit, we to can become shipwrecked in our faith going nowhere.

The conscience or voice of our spirit is where we learn to follow the guidance of our spirit man, which when born again will lead us in line with the Word of God. When we reject our conscience, we are not walking in line with the Word and therefore out of faith, for faith without corresponding action is dead. Our conscience will reveal when we have missed it with God, and if we listen and repent, we maintain our confidence toward God and our faith remains active. So listen closely to your conscience if you don’t want to become shipwrecked, causing your faith to go nowhere.
