On This Rock

Matthew 16:17-18
17 Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.
18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.

One of the most powerful truths from this set of scriptures is often overlooked and I want to share it with you. Jesus had just asked His disciples who men said He was, and then He asks them who do you say I am. Peter responds that He is the Christ, the Son of the living God. Then in the above verses Jesus declares an important truth. He reveals to Peter that these words did not come from flesh and blood, they were not Peter’s words, but they came from the Father, they were God’s Word.

As the Son of God, Jesus is the Word of God as John 1:14 tells us. The powerful truth often overlooked and setting right before our eyes is the fact that when a believer speaks the Word of God (what God has said), and not their own words, the gates of hell, representing the authority of hell, will not prevail against that believer, who is a part of the church. There are many verses for this. For example Revelation 12:11 tells us we overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony.

When our words testify of what the blood of Jesus did for us instead of speaking the problem, we are declaring what God has said about it. When we allow our words to speak the problem we face, and we speak contrary to what God says over our lives, we are magnifying the devil and his works and we give him place to work against us. Jesus Himself only spoke what He heard the Father speak. Changes your words to be in agreement with God’s Word and your enemy cannot prevail. You will overcome by the Word of God.
